Books are the plane, the train, and the road. They are the destination and the journey. They are home.

Fifth graders at St. Mary's School focus on the power of reading. We have reading time every day, and reading for homework every night. We talk about reading and write about reading. We learn to annotate and analyze what we read. We read a variety of genres. At all times students are reading a book of their choice along with a class novel. I read aloud to them daily.
My twenty years of teaching have proven to me that good readers are good students. Teaching my students to read mindfully is my goal and my passion. I am grateful for the opportunity to teach reading the best way I know how here at St. Mary's.
My ELA students (grades 3-5) learn grammar and parts of speech by diagramming sentences daily. Our grammar curriculum is rigorous, including vocabulary, dictations and several grammar lessons each week. Cursive writing is also part of our curriculum.
